Food is fantastic. I always order the Triple Dip. Food is very reasonable and it's more than you can finish. We used to order Spaghetti and Alfredo sauce To Go, but they doubled the price making it not worth while any more....too bad

I really want to like this place, but it needs to a restaurant makeover. The chairs and booth and tables are old and the floor is older. It feels like a very homey place, like regulars would come here, but not inviting for a newbie to the area. Service was fantastic. The food on the other hand lacked a whole lot. It was disappointing since cosesstas is near by as we decided to come here instead to try something new. I had their spaghetti and meatballs. They were the heaviest un-flavorful meat balls I've ever tasted. It hurts my heart to write such a crappy review when we had such great service but at the end of the day the food is the star and this star has lost its brightness. My spaghetti was watery... soupy even. When I pushed my noodles to the side and tilted the there was at least a half of cup of watery tomato sauce lingering underneath. My husband tried their lasagna. The portion was huge, the flavor again was lacking. It was burnt and just not good. Now I don't have super high standards when it come to family run restaurant food but damn, both of our meals were disappointing. We ate only a small portion and asked the rest to go to be nice, but threw it out when we got home. Bummers. I thought this place could of been a diamond in the rough.

What's the benefit of being off on MLK day? Well, other than being off and not have to deal with emails and phone calls for a day? I actually still dealt with emails and calls but I also could go out for lunch with my friends to DeGidio's! Tons of high marks have been thrown at me regarding this restaurant. I had high expectations and I was so glad to finally try it. Though I know I was going there for almost a week, I ended up eating Spaghetti Bolognese on Saturday and Rigatoni at Tucci Benuch on Sunday. I thought I would be done with pasta and Italian food for awhile. Nope. I woke up Monday morning wanting chicken parm and chicken parm only. I was meeting Dita D and Sam W there. This is too much pressure writing a review after them. I can't be as witty and funny as Sam no matter if I put 1000 fuck words in here. I can't be as snarky honest like Dita either. What I do best is long winded detailed honest. They told me they read my reviews word for word. So, let's fuckin (1) do it my style and see if they really do read it. Hehehe? Is it fuckin (2) snarky enough? Uh, I know it doesn't. Screw it. Let's just eat some chicken parm! There was cheesy bread with marinara on the table when I came. Those were so delicious and it started me right off like a new spark plug. They were warm, crunchy in a bready kind of way, cheesy, and the sauce had a little kick to it that made it over the top. Turned out, both Dita and Sam also had a weekend filled with pasta so they voted against that. Dita ordered a Hot Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich with giardiniera peppers. Sam got the Hot Pastrami on a marble rye bread. I got the chicken parm and I was set on that before I arrived at the restaurant. I had been searching for a baked chicken parm like this in Minnesota for awhile. It was like how I used to order it at Pizza Palace in Chicago. It was perfect!!!! The one at Buona Sera in Champlin was great but the chicken wasn't deep fried, and the pasta was on the side. Plus, they didn't let me add mushroom. I had everything just how I liked it here. That mound of pasta and chicken covered in melted mozzarella made me really happy. I had to make sure to get the right angle when taking picture to capture the height of that thing on the plate. It was super tall and humongous in girth! When I finally attacked it, it tasted just like how I envisioned it. The Spaghetti was perfectly al dente, and the chicken was crispy and covered with melted cheese. I wish there was more sauce though. I love a lot of sauce on my pasta. However, that was the shit as far as chicken parm goes. Dita and Sam's sandwiches looked fantastic and they were massive. I tried a bite each and I had to give it to the Hot Pastrami. I think I was a bit biased on the Italian Beef and it's just hard to beat Portillo's in my eyes. The hand cut fries were awesome though. I was loving the fries a lot. They were fresh and had a crunch to it. I was planning to give 5 stars but I wasn't in love with the desserts. We ordered Tiramisu and Canolis as we had so much fun talking that we ( I ) didn't really want it to end so soon. The tiramisu felt like it was bought from a distributor. I didn't feel like it was made in premises but I could be wrong. Dita complained it was too overpowered by rum or brandy in that last layer. The canoli was hard and the cream was really dense mascarpone cheese mixture that it was hard to enjoy due to the texture. Jenny A said that the canoli looked like dicks on the picture. Except, I, for once, wanted them to be softer than hard. I tried several time to cut through it with a knife, and I couldn't. I was not as talented as Lorena Bobbit. The service was pretty good as well. We were served by perhaps family members helping out as they were dressed in street clothes than server outfits. It was different but they were on top of it. All was done as it should be. I am looking forward eating my leftover. I think I'm going to be eating spaghetti for several days now. As always, the best part was laughing hysterically with friends, talking and shooting the breeze. The cherry on top was the food were as great! It was a fine Monday afternoon. Monday usually sucks ass but not today. Not today.

Came in for early dinner. Had Sloppy Hot Dagos. Greeted promptly, drinks served promptly, waiter was kind, helpful, but not overbearing. Food was quickly served and outstanding. Highly recommend.

We love DeGidio's!! We go there often when we want a good meal that we can count on. We love all the pastas, all the specials, and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. They really know their stuff and know the menu good, which is a plus. We love the location and we love that they've been around for years and years. As long as the DeGidio's is around, we will be coming back!

We were seated on the bar while they prepped our table; That was when all the fun started. We looked around and the other guests knew we were first timers. We got our recommendations and tips from everyone including Kevin the barman. The food was done to levels rivaling your own granny cooking. The Pastas were just right with amazing sauces that cannot be praised enough. BTW the whole gang of 15 (6 of which were present this Sunday) agree that pastas are not to be ordered nor recommended at restaurants. This time it was an exception because every tip or recommendation we got had a pasta spirit to it. The chicken wings (well done please) were appetizer galore. I got a whole serving to share then another one to savor. Bruschetta came on toasted crostini slices and drizzled with a glazed vinaigrette. There was agreement on the uniqueness of the taste and all thumbs were up. Chicken Parm was very tender inside and well crisped outside. The great thing about the place is that they are willing to substitute anything for anything. They also would almost cook your own recipe for you. The service was top notch. It seems that our server was among the newer ones because she was neither born to parents who met while working for in the place nor spent more than 16 years working here. BTW I am not kidding when I say that almost everyone here guests or staff seem to know everyone else. The lady next to us on the bar was addressing everyone around by their first name and the man on a table near us was pointing to how many people on the full restaurant that he knows; Julie, Mark, Allen, Stan, Mickey, Ruth, etc.... he kept identifying.

Dinner Club - Friday night pick. Got right in, plenty of parking. Old school look, lot's of dark wood. Had a gin martini with lemoncello, very tasty. Their red sauce is delicious. Had the mostaccioli with roasted mushrooms, sausage, and meatballs. Italian sausage had a nice kick to them, the meatballs were not dense, they were moist and tasty. Tiramisu was excellent, melted in your mouth, boozy and rich. We will be back!

Generally, Italian food to me is various kinds of noodles with various kinds of red sauce. All basically the same but with a different name that I have trouble pronouncing. DeGidio's is different. DeGidio's is amazing. This isn't the frozen lasagna roll-ups or the breaded Ravioli that tastes like dirty feet that you'll get at Olive Garden. And this definitely isn't the obnoxiously loud and distracting decor, rude wait staff and chewy binder calamari from Buca Di Beppo. DeGidio's is to Italian Food as Italian food is to italian food. Shit. Just. Got. Real. This is some Kiss My Ass I'm Mutha Truckin' Delicious, Burn your face off with some serious flavor, kick your girlfriend in the ass, Italian food. It's a good thing, too, because I was beginning to question whether or not good Italian food even existed in this city or if we were all doomed to a world of chain restaurants and lean cuisine style frozen dishes that they put "atini" at the end of and call it Italian. The future was looking rather bleak for a while there.Turns out making up Italian sounding words doesn't make your food not suck, We order the Mediterranean Muscles every time we go. We can't resist them. The muscles are perfect. The broth is rich. It's a food-gasm and we can't be denied. The Bolognese and the Lasagna seem to be Sam's reliables. Both are layers of flavor with a rich roubust tomato sauce packed full of meat and balanced with the perfect amount of herbs. The Bolognese has just enough heat to make you scratch your way out of your grave to get a bite. I prefer to scour the menu, always looking for something to surprise me or excite me. I'm never disappointed here. The seafood linguine is a must try. The muscles are great and the shrimp is tasty, but the scallops are cooked to perfection with a golden brown crust on both sides for a melt in your mouth sink in your seat moment. The Tortelloni Bolognese is a creamy, slightly spicy and very cheesy dish. Worth every bite. The chicken parmesan was juicy and crunchy breaded breast nestled in a bed of way more spaghetti than I could ever eat by myself. The shrimp Alfredo is the rich and creamy sauce you want in an alfredo, but this one cannot, ever, miss those tomatoes. The tomatoes are a necessity for balancing this dish and they acidity breaking up the creamy sauce is like fireworks if you're in the right mood. They no longer serve those once addicting Italian sodas but order a San Pellegrino with a splash of cream and you're set. I've only sat in the dining room but the bar looks like a lot of fun. The inside of the restaurant is dark, rich tones. It feels secretive.. The chocolate covered Cannolis are perfect for sharing and the Tiramisu is the perfect ending to a date. Order one of those with your sweetie to set the tone for a perfect night out together. It's never a bad idea to take your lovemuffin out on a date. Give this place a shot.

My wife and I just stumbled onto DeGidios. Good atmosphere, great food, HUGE servings and delicious cocktails. They did serve my wife the wrong dish (she didn't notice, they did!) and they offered to give us both dishes or free dessert. We took them up on the dessert, which was also fantastic.

Take your time to enjoy good food and friendly people. I ate in the bar and did some pull tab game. Fun. This could be a place like "Cheers" were you develop friendships with other patrons as go back again and again. I like the people but I would hate the winters.... brrrr

Even though the digs are newish, this is one of the oldest restaurants in Saint Paul. Two (awesome) words: "Super + Club!" DeGidio's is what's good about a neighborhood super club. I can't believe I'm saying the the house wines CAN be trusted. The Bolognese sauces with sausage and cream border on lavish. The service was friendly, outstanding actually, quick, and they seriously seemed to care.nThe bread was surprisingly good. This is not a foodie enclave. It's a kick ass local supper club that will make you feel comfortable, quickly, with nice hot family Italian fare. Google the history of the joint while you're waiting for dinner. You're actually in presence of famous late-mafia royal lore ghosts.

We were looking for a new Italian place to try before an event at the X. It was a little bit farther to walk from where we parked, but manageable. The interior is old-school Italian, and they have tasty food at reasonable prices. What I really liked was the history of the place and how they've maintained a family vibe over the years, something getting ever harder to find in the cities. I could see myself coming in here on a football Sunday for a great lunch and some wine, hanging out at the huge rectangular bar with some friends, as a nice change of pace from the sports bars.

I stopped here because I really needed an adult bev...I had been outside all day volunteering and needed a cold, crisp beverage! It was a hot, humid summer day...thank goodness there is free parking on weekends in St Paul (and the private lot DeGidio's has). This is definitely you're classic establishment, brass handle on the door, dark wooden interior, low light, TVs everywhere, PULL TABS and rectangular bar in middle. We quickly found a hi-top with 4 stools, after a solid greeting from the bar keep. A number of local, national and international brews on the list, I landed on a Surly (my go to), while the other gents in my group settled for something else. On top of that, we ordered the Pizza Fries...yeah, that totally happened. I was thinking the fries would be these tiny things...NAY. They were literally the size of my fingers, larger than my fingers...served with a healthy portion of pizza sauce. It definitely hit the spot and easily fed four grown men. Fast and friendly service, cool atmosphere and excellent Pizza Fries :-) I'll have to stop again for an actual meal, but impressed during my first visit!

On weekends, they don't do reservations, but we only had a 10 minute wait. Service was good, dinner was great, dessert was great. Ambiance is a little unique, in a good way. My wife and I pigged out, had drinks and dessert for less than $50. I love it!

I have a soft spot for good Italian food, and although this wasn't the best or most authentic Italian food I've ever had in my life, it was (a) fresh and hot and (b) pretty satisfying. We stopped by on a Saturday night with friends before heading to the lounge at Mancini's, right down the street. We had two excellent appetizers, a sliced calzone with salami and provolone, and "pizza fries," which I expected to be regular french fries covered in pizza sauce, but which were actually more like small, hot, parmesan-crusted breadsticks. Hot and steaming and delicious. I had a really good antipasto-style salad, which was too big to finish, and my husband tried their version of the Jucy Lucy (the "Juicy Lucia," get it?) which he liked a lot, but the "handcut" fries left a lot to be desired. They were frozen fries, and not very warm, kind of limp. I do like the atmosphere here--old-school, red and paneled and warm and inviting--and it was really busy when we got in around seven. I can see why it would be; it's an inviting and pleasant place. Service was fairly good, although our server seemed really surprised by a request for mayo and said he'd have to check if they had it, which perplexed me. I don't think it's as cute as others apparently do to name a sandwich after an old racial slur (the "Hot Dago"), but maybe that's because as a second-generation American I grew up listening to the stories my grandparents/aunts/uncles told about the hardships they endured as new immigrants to the U.S.--the slurs and social stigma and years of menial work in terrible conditions. But I imagine there aren't many of that generation left anymore, especially not in Minnesota. Still. It is interesting that this restaurant was apparently founded by a 1930s bootlegger. Who knew? In any case, we'll probably be back.

This place feels so inviting and comfortable as soon as you enter. Everyone is so friendly and seems genuinely happy to be working there. We did not make reservations because it was a Saturday night(Fridays and Saturdays it is first come first serve), but they had a booth available right away. I ordered the baked goat cheese/marinara appetizer and it was delicious. I also had the seafood linguine- it had great flavors, a little too much broth, but otherwise great! Can't wait to go back. Another added bonus was that they had a large parking lot!

Amazing food! One of my top two Italian places in the cities. Great flavors. The portion sizes are large so you will definitely have leftovers. The staff were really nice and it feels like a family-run restaurant.

Super delicious Italian food here. It's prepared simply and well. I recently got the spaghetti bake special, and it was a big cheesy plate of hot, delicious pasta happiness. The spaghetti and meatballs is also great. The portions are very generous, definitely enough for one or two more meals. You definitely get a good value for your money here. I can't wait until my next visit.

I am in deep, deep love with DeGidio's. It's a little bit of an unhealthy obsession, but it doesn't matter. There is only one thing I hate about this place; everyone else is in love with it, too, which means it's usually very busy. This wouldn't be a problem if the parking wasn't such a pain in the ass when this occurs. But let's just forget about that for a moment, shall we? Their lasagna is perfect. Everything is balanced and the portion is HUGE (easily enough for leftovers the next day). It's cheesy, meaty and comforting like a warm blanket fresh out of the dryer. The mussels with linguini is equally amazing. The sauce, a soft broth of white wine, garlic and butter, is beautiful in its simplicity. There's nothing quite like listening to the soft clacking of the mussel shells while you spin a forkful of pasta. Other highlights include the Linguini Bolognese (creamy, satisfying and just a touch spicy from the sausage), the Arancini Di Risotto (crispy, cheesy and a great start to the meal) and, of course, the garlic bread. I'm blown away by the prices at this place. They're already cheap but when you factor in the quality and quantity you receive, they're stunning. I just can't begin to think of another place that even remotely compares. Do yourself a favor and eat here. I can absolutely promise you that you won't be disappointed.

How have I lived in St. Paul for so many years and never visited this place?! The atmosphere is classy, the food is amazing, and the service is top notch. . We had cheese bread for an appetizer and it was the best cheese bread I have ever had. Most places you get two slices and cold sauce but here, you get ten pieces of ooey, gooey, crisp on the button, soft on the inside bread. I might just order this next time and eat it for my meal! We ordered Chicken Parmesan.. Yep, my dining companion and I both ordered the same thing and it was spicy with the most perfectly balanced red sauce, and covered in cheese. The prices are cheaper than comparable Italian Restaurants and they have daily specials which are crazy reasonable. The portions are huge, enough for two meals or to split. I had more than half of my chicken Parmesan leftover but I left it in my friend's car, so they got to eat it!!!! I was so upset! I can not wait to go back and try more items and this time, I will not forget my leftovers in anyone's car!

I don't live and die by the words of Dara MG, but she nailed it on this place: this is the king of red sauce in St. Paul! Many of my fellow Yelpers have already described the perfect blend of herbs and spices(props to Jenny A.), but I had to give DeGideo's my own high-five. The sauce whisked me back to the days when we'd visit my Italian grandmother in Chicago, who knew a thing or two about Italian food and was in the right area to buy her ingredients. This is the deep red, tangy, ultra tomato-ey, beautifully seasoned stuff that is somewhat rare in these parts. Paired with their delicious spicy sausage, this is a real treat. This place isn't trying to be Pazzaluna, and the low prices reflect this. It's simple, flavorful, homemade- tasting Italian food (if you're lucky enough to have an Italian grandma that loved to cook). The warm, dark colors and reasonable prices make this a great choice for a casual date night.

I have lived near here for a while and never been. Sunday night I wanted Italian food in the worst way so off we went. I grew up on the East Coast so my Italian needs are specific, I want an old school red sauce joint. I was NOT disappointed. The portions were huge and delicious! Our table had a variety of the entrees, I tasted my husband's filet mignon and it was amazing, my tortellini bolognese was exactly as described and yummy and for a pleasant change, when they say spicy Italian sausage, you get spicy! My daughters chicken parmigiana was huge and looked great although I have not yet dived into the to go box with her leftovers. I particularly loved the bread basket because - you get the garlic butter on the side, so if you prefer light garlic you can control the amount. I admit we stuffed the left over garlic butter into the leftover box as well! My only reason for not giving them five stars is that as a wheelchair user, I found the table a little crowded with chairs and the aisles a little narrow but the hostess was really helpful and gracious.

OK I am into places that serve my favorite cocktail - a Dewars Rob Roy - properly. Many places think it's dry vermouth or add an olive or get the proportions wrong and that is a big minus for me. I never know whether to trust the establishment to know how to make that drink or to micro manage the server by telling him/her 'it's basically a scotch manhattan. I am pleased to say that DeGidio's knows how to make a Rob Roy. Okay let's get onto the food part. The couple we dined with were lucky enough to find a free appetizer coupon online and we enjoyed the terriyaki chicken wings. They were really meaty and the terriyaki sauce was very good. Lots of celery with a very good blue cheese dipping sauce was also provided. I have to say that my dinner was a tad disappointing. I ordered the whole wheat spaghetti with chicken meatballs. HOLY COW what was I thinking? This is an old established West 7th Italian landmark so why am I ordering WHOLE WHEAT pasta and CHICKEN meatballs. The sauce was really good but the meatballs were on the dry side and extremely salty. The whole wheat pasta was OK but not like real pasta. We all had a glass of wine with dinner. My chardonnay was very nice (it was the house choice and I neglected to get the name) and it was a very generous pour. Our companions were delighted with the nightly special which was a breaded chicken breast topped with their Italian sauce, a caesar salad, a side of spaghetti with sauce and a second side of veggies. The veggies tonight were green beans which looked to be sauteed with some green peppers. A bread basket with 'soft' butter and warm Italian bread was a definite plus. Our waiter was great allowing us to proceed at our own pace and there when we needed him. Our bill was just a tad over $50 - a bargooon. The place was pretty packed on a Wednesday night which says a lot!! Don't miss it if you're in the neighborhood and if your not it's worth a drive - plus you can stop into the West 7th Hardware Store just down the street a ways and find anything your heart desires in the shape of nuts, bolts, screws, nails, hammers, etc etc. Greatest hardware store ever!

Wow, delicious! My fiance and I have been here a few times. DeGidio's holds a special little place in our heart, we've celebrated a few occasions here, but the reason we've been back, and will continue to be back is that this place is by far my favorite Italian restaurant in the Twin Cities, and I love Italian food. Helpful little hint, try the Tortelloni Bolognese.... It's a little piece of heaven.

I really like this place. Been coming here for years, always great food and service. Homemade sauces, meats are great, just all around good home cooking italian food. Great portions. The red sauce is one of my faves. Like their italian sausage too. Great place for kids.

We ate here a few weeks back, we were actually doing a tasting to see if we'd have DeGidio's cater our wedding. Oh my gosh! The food was ALL so good, and they took such good care of us! The restaurant itself is very nice and relaxing inside, the food just speaks for itself! The owners were kind enough to come out and visit our venue and were very responsive. I'm so impressed with the restaurant and the catering business. Specifics... Strawberry salad -- yum!! Stromboli -- super yum! Also loved the pastas in white and red sauce with sausage and peppers.

My husband and I loved Degidios, the food is always great. I have to give him credit for thinking to look into this restaurant to see if they also hosted wedding receptions. From the very beginning, Jason and the staff at Degidios have been fantastic. The prices are very reasonable and the food is high quality. Jason gave lots of helpful suggestions and if we had questions they always responded quickly. The employees who staffed the reception were efficient, very professional and frequently checked with us to see if we needed anything. We got lots of compliments about the food and were so happy that we chose to have our reception at Degidios! (We were also happy to support a small local business)

We pulled in one night and the parking lot was packed to the gills. No wonder this place is always busy. The food is really good! "Please Seat Yourself" sign was posted, so we chose a booth. Not worried about a server not seeing us. Ours must have been waiting in her area. Shortly there after she came over with a menu and took our drink orders. They serve unsweetened ice tea which is a big plus. We could have done without the garlic cheese bread appetizer, but we were starving when we arrived. It was ok. J ordered the Blackened Shrimp Alfredo which was very good. Liguini with blackened pan seared shrimp in a very tasty sauce. I had a few bites and it was incredible. I was really in the mood for a steak. I'm usually not a fan of sirloin at all, but this place impressed. I ordered my meat medium rare and this was done perfect to my liking. It is more of a hunk of meat. Dry rub wasn't overly flavorful, but it was still good. They have hand cut fries which was a plus. I prefer these over the sysco system fries. The caesar salad was one of the best I've had in awhile. Nice size salad that came with my meal. It had black olives, marinated red onion, parmesan and a really good caesar dressing. Seems like a great family run neighborhood place with a bar, nice dining area, good service and great food!

We made our first trip to Degidio's last night and were VERY impressed. The environment is friendly. The wait staff was very professional. I've never had better ravioli and my husband raved about the lasagna. The tiramisu was delicious. We'll certainly go back whenever we're looking for Italian. This place is a gem.

I'm sorry but this food was horrible. I had the spaghetti with the chicken meatballs and rge garlic cheese bread and that was like $26. Ok I'm not complaining about the price if the food is worth it but it was definitely not at this spot. The red sauce tasted like canned tomato sauce and the garlic cheese bread had a paper thin layer of cheese and it was a couple of stands of shredded cheese. I give this spot the thumbs down and I'm never going back...

The meatballs and peppers were spicy, which I loved! Everything came out super fresh and hot, even though we were in a large group and the place was busy. They had a great Caesar salad with plenty of fresh croutons. The turtle chocolate lava cake was so amazing!!!!

The strawberry bruschetta is awesome!!! The only reason I didn't give DeGidio's five stars was because they didn't serve espresso, which I found odd for an Italian restaurant. Other than that I would highly recommend it DeGidio's. Also I would like to give a shout out to our server Jeremy aka "The Beard". He was very attentive to our large group of eighteen, everyone was very pleased with the service. Fun fact: Jeremy's favorite music is Dub Step - it is very important to know your servers favorite music when choosing a new restaurant.

The layout of DeGidio's was aesthetically pleasing for me. The lower level bar area separated from a more family oriented dinning area is nice, and since they let you choose your own seat (I wish every place did that) you get to choose your ambiance. I got to pick a great location on the top, right above the bar area with windows that allow you to look down and keep an eye on a TV if you want. I took a small review's advice in Vita.mn and ordered their Old-Fashioned Hot Dago. I have never really been a huge Italian restaurant fan, thinking it all taste pretty similar, but good reviews and high recommendations gave me high hopes for this meal. The Hot Dago came with a good portion size. A huge piece of bread of bread topped with spicy sausage, spaghetti sauce, and mozzarella cheese. The spaghetti sauce and sausage didn't stand out to me. I couldn't help but think this was just over-glorified cheesy bread. I also got to try their Chicken Alfredo. I thought this was a lot better than the Dago. A light Alfredo sauce and fall apart chicken really shined. I also had a really good dessert. The Tiramisu was great. It was soft, sweet, and light tasting. I probably could have finished 10 orders of it. I will have to try more off the menu some other time to give it more of a fair review.

My friend and I stopped by on a Thursday night after school for happy hour. We had two excellent appetizers (cheesy bread & bruschetta) and dinner. The cheesy bread was so delicious and the food portion are huge. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and the food is so amazing. Our waitress was very friendly and checked in on us frequently. I cant wait to go back here to eat with my husband.

I was only going to stop by DeGidio's for take out, but when my boyfriend and I stepped in we decided it was worth the visit. We got there around nine, and it was busy, but not too crowded. Great, prompt service. The strawberry bruschetta was delicious. We got the traditional pasta as well as the rigatoni. Large portions for solid prices, both delicious as well. Our waitress was kind enough to let me sample a white wine, too. Overall a lovely place. I will definitely stop by next time I'm in the twin cities. :)

Loved it. Because - - the staff was friendly and SO fast - the food was incredible (a slab of lasagna 8 inches long for $11?!) - the caramel cheesecake was perfect - the Riesling was a full glass and $4 - baked goat cheese + marinara + garlic bread The portions are humongous. Get an appetizer if you want, but you definitely won't need it. I will be back.

I was visiting some friends in MN last weekend and we stopped by DeGidio's for Saturday night dinner. Living in NYC, I am fortunate to have access to lots of top-notch Italian places. But the food at DeGidio's is better than most of what I have had in NYC. This is not the trendy Batali-style Italian, but rather the traditional, authentic, hearty Italian that has been around for generations. Everything we had was delicious! The bread and baked goatcheese dip were unbelievably tasty. And when I saw my friend's strawberry salad, I regretted not ordering one for myself (next time!). I was overwhelmed by the menu options, so the owner himself recommended his favorite dish -- Tortelloni Bolognese. It was spicy, piping hot, and so flavorful. And the portion was huge! I also loved learning the history of this place (check out the website) and always like supporting a business that has been in the family for as long as this one has. Bottom line: If you are looking for a chill atmosphere and delicious Italian food that won't break the bank, give DeGidio's a try!

Have heard great things about this place but I prefer Yarusso's over this place. Biggest reason: Portions were on the small side. We both cleaned our plates, no leftovers to take home which never happens to us. Didn't leave feeling super satisfied so had to run thru DQ and raid the Halloween candy when we got home . 3 Stars is probably a bit too low but can't say I'm a fan either.

Back again for a regular visit. Pizza appetizer made a full meal and was delicious. Back one night later with a friend and had meatballs. Excellent choice, done to perfection. Don't miss this Italian treat when you are in the "cities".

We had a table of 11 and had a split decision on this place. Service was good save the spilled water on my wife! Food was mixed dago, Alfredo, spag were mixed. Salads were decent. All in all okay nor great but better than going to Olive Garden or Maggianis,

DeGidio's is a fun place I've enjoyed for years. You like a Lunch Special? Well my friend, leme tell ya, DeGidio's has 'em, all the time. I don't want to say DeGidio's is "cheap," because that isn't a word that should be attached to such a fine establishment. That said, the prices are extreme in their reasonability. The service is mighty good, too. Some interesting notes of historic significance: The banquet room in back, a great place for a reception, a reunion, or a retirement, used to be a bowling alley. But the balls got dusty and DeGidio's had the foresight to make a transition. I'm damn glad they did; I've enjoyed many an event there. There's some sort of lore surrounding the original proprietor, Joe DeGidio. They call him "Kid Bullets." I don't know why. I mean, I can guess, but there's nothing specific mentioned in the menu. For good reason, I imagine. Maybe I don't want to know that the ghost of a Mafioso-type haunts the building. It's cool to think it's possible, though. The photos of Mr. DeGidio depict a service-oriented family man, and that is all the people need to know. There's been a recent menu change where everything's Italian now. For example, there used to be a bacon cheeseburger on the menu, which was likely the best burger this side of the river (Sorry Blue Door and Moe's). Now, it's some sort of an Italian burger, a Paisano patty melt, I guess. Still very good, but I kind of miss the old menu. Next time I'm in there, I'll ask if they can accommodate my request for nostalgia. Last Word on DeGidio's: The beer is cold, and the happy hour is hoppin! Treat yourself and c'mon down!

I wanted to like this place so badly, but, sadly, the service we received as a party of 5 celebrating a birthday on a Thursday evening knocks this establishment down to 3 stars :( The food was EXCELLENT! Our fivesome tried the Mussel Linguine, Caesar Salad, Chicken Alfredo, Lasagna with Italian Sausage, & Rigatoni with meatballs. Our server, on the other hand, totally ruined our experience. He stated on multiple occasions that he wasn't busy & would take wonderful care of us, however, after he took our order, he was not to be seen again. Never asked how our food was. Never came back to order our promised birthday dessert. We had to ask for refills & extra sauce from the poor food runner, who couldn't seem to catch a break, running all of our server's errands. Our server never even came back to get us our bill. WE HAD TO FLAG HIM DOWN w/ a screaming child @ the table & even then, it took him, NO JOKE, 10 minutes to get our tab. As far as the dining room was concerned, he had ONE other table. It was awful. I am normally not this critical of service, but holy moly. He acted put off that we would even ask for our check & did not apologize once. Good thing this place had great food & other good employees cause this guy really knows how to ruin a special occasion. We will be back, but we may, perhaps, choose to sit @ the bar.

Outstanding! My husband and I popped in for a bite to eat before the NCAA hockey championship game this last weekend. We sat at a table in the bar area and had very efficient service despite a large crowd. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan and my husband had the Linguini Bolognese with a meatball. Both were very, very good. If you are in St. Paul and want old-school Italian food at a great price with terrific service, DeGidio's is the place.

A traditional, long-established Italian place. Hope it never goes away. Was fun to meet up w/ hub's Connecticut relatives who asked, "What's a Hot Dago?" We had to splain it's an Italian meatloaf open-faced sandwich named from a negative epithet for a particular heritage of people. Well let's hope that history is forgotten and it just means Italian meat loaf. I alway enjoy this place and I always halve my dinner to savor at lunch the next day. My most recent meal a couple of weeks ago was the chicken parmesana, so crispy good. And how do they cook the spag so perfectly? I can NEVER do that at home. The strawberry salad is very good as is the caesar. I'm pleased to see Lambrusco by the glass on the wine list, given that Zonin and Ruinite dissed it so in the late 1970s that the grape was given a bad name. It's a really sweet red wine, so sweet that if you don't like red wine for the tannin taste, you *would* probably like Lambrusco. Wonderful warm atmosphere throughout. Great server staff.

Great bread. Nice old school atmosphere, with a couple of bars to boot. Get the spaghetti and meatballs, you won't be disappointed. And quiet is kept, a lot of Italian restaurants make a mean fried chicken. This place is no different. Nice courteous staff too.

Basic Italian-American fare. Lots and lots of cheese and none too traditional flavors. Fun old-minnesota style bar, basic wine selection. The menu is rather small and we all ordered the chicken parm - it was good. The bruschetta is way way over priced, and it wasnt that great. So expect lots of garlic, tomato sauce and cheese. Friendly service and classic MN- Italian atmosphere.

Delicious Again! My low carb friendly dining companion actually suggested Degidios, much to my surprise, for dinner recently. Here is why I like this place - I know what I'm getting, the food comes fast, the meatballs are great and I don't even eat meat, portions are way too big (so you can have leftovers...mmmm) and it all tastes good. I had the baked (with either a meatball - which I chose -or Italian sausage) rigatoni special which came with a dinner salad. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I kept eating even while full - shocking, I know! I chose the special based on the fact I got a salad. I typically choose the baked mostaccioli which a salad would be extra. My dining companion had the baked mostaccioli and added meatballs and sausage. I found the sausage to be a bit spicy for my liking. Now, some of the cons of the evening = the service was okay, refills on beverages were not offered. I love bread, but I don't care for the bread that comes with the meal. It reminds me of the crap from the freezer section with garlic and butter on both sides that you bake in the oven. I do however recommend the garlic cheese bread from the appetizer menu. When you're looking for something quick, easy, and delicious as an alternative to a chain or a more expensive place, this might be the place to check out.

Went here for a work lunch. I had the hot dago. It was my first introduction to a hot dago. I was happy with my choice, tasty and spicy. Overall a good place to eat, but it's not going to draw me back unless I happen to wind up there for another event.

After all the years of living in the Twin Cities, I finally went to this place for dinner. The parking lot appeared to be recently re-sealed and white-striped, and my dining companion noted that the inside appeared to be recently renovated. Per the instruction on the sign at the entrance, we sat ourselves after spying a comfortable booth. Moments later, a server came by to deliver glasses of water, tell us about the evening special and ask whether we'd like something else to drink. They offer a smallish-selection of wines and beers. I chose a glass of Tempranillo (Spain). At the recommendation of my companion, I ordered their strawberry side-salad. For my entree, I ordered their linguine bolognese. Overall, their menu offerings were small in number but wide in variety. Respectable offerings, I would say, and not overwhelming The glass of wine was nearly filled to the top of the glass and tasted fine. The strawberry salad was delightful with fresh romaine lettuce, softened red onion and quartered strawberries with some shavings of Parmesan cheese, and a lightly creamy poppy seed dressing. I'd certainly order this salad again - even as a "meal salad" - I think it would be great with some roasted chicken on it. I really enjoyed my bowl of linguine with creamy tomato sauce and pieces of Italian sausage that offered just a little kick of spice. It sort of reminded me of a stroganoff with its creamy, silky texture. I would most certainly order this again (and share it with someone so as not to eat to the point of becoming uncomfortably full). Even though I ate about 2/3 of my bowl of pasta, I brought a smaller-sized helping home to eat as leftovers.

DeGidio's has been a staple in my life for over 30 years. In all of those years, never have I been disappointed (except when they got rid of the bocce courts). The service has alway been impeccable! My wife and I stopped in tonight, and without looking at the menu, we both knew what we wanted. I ordered the sloppy dago (as I have for 15+ years) and she got the chicken fettucini alfredo. Within what seemed like 10 minutes, we were already scooping deliciousness into our mouths. If there is ever 1 meal I would recommend, it's a sloppy dago (my wife says they have finally changed it on the menu to "Hot Italian Sandwich", but I'll never call it that). The sausage has a good spice, without being hot, and the red sauce is seasoned, but simple, just perfect. If you are in the area, stop in, you'll never be disappointed.

This place really impressed me. The food was delicious. The sauce had a very unique and leave you wanting more flavor. The garlic cheese bread was great too with a nice portion size. I had the Parmesan Chicken and it was quite good with tasty angel hair pasta and sauce. Overall I will be coming back. There were a few things that I wasn't so impressed with, but the food is worth it. Plenty of parking and seating available. The bar has many TVs. I would recommend stopping in and trying this place out if you haven't already. You'll find out why they have been in business so long.

Saturday evening excursion 6pm-ish with the wife and three kids (2-15 & 1-10; all girls). No wait although we compromised by accepting a booth for 4 with a chair that had just been vacated. We were there for about an hour and a quarter during which the place got busier. It certainly was full the entire time we were there. Our server was prompt with drinks and taking our order. We had the cheese garlic bread and the margherita flatbread -- both were delicious. Adding wonderfully to the flavor was the bowl of tomato sauce that accompanied the cheese garlic bread. I recommend dipping. My wife ordered the whole wheat pasta with chicken meatballs. i had the standard pasta with meatballs, and ordered an extra chicken meatball. Kids ordered cheese tortellini, fetucini alfredo and pasta and meatballs. Without even asking we were also provided a basket of garlic bread (the server suggested dipping in the sauce, and excellent and tasty suggestion). All dishes were quite tasty. The chicken meatballs had a nice kick to them. Pasta was cooked perfectly. Alfredo was creamy but not excessively so. We didn't care too much for the whole wheat pasta. Compared to WW pasta I'd had before, it was pretty good. But I think we just don't care to much for it. Was it the best Italian food ever? Maybe not. A solid 3-3.5 starts for sure. Service was very good. Food was promptly served and water glasses fill regularly. My only (small) complaint is that we asked for no cheese on the meatballs and pasta and they sprinkled a little bit on it -- easily removed. With tip bill came to $80. A pretty good value considering 4.5 entrees, 2 appetizers and 3 kid cocktails. Plus we have plenty of leftovers (except for the whole wheat pasta).

We drove by many times and always saw the parking lot full. We decided to finally try it and we are so glad we did. Portions are huge! My boyfriend and I could've easily split the spaghetti and meatballs but I'm glad he ordered the beef raviolis. They were the best ravioli I've ever had. The garlic cheese bread was a huge portion although it took forever and was cold. It spent a lot of time hanging in the window for sure. Our server seemed overwhelmed and I don't get annoyed that easy so we enjoyed it anyway. The garlic bread that came with dinner was also cold. It could've been soooo much better made fresh or at least warmed before being served. After the cheese bread and the spaghetti the size of a small chid I didn't need more carbs anyway. Steer clear of dessert. We had the salted caramel cheesecake and it was definitely from the freezer. Bland and average. The red sauce is amazing. The meatballs at delicious and the raviolis are top notch. Next time we go back, I'm trying the strawberry bruschetta.

I started going to DeGidio's when I moved to Minnesota in 2006. It quickly became my favorite Italian restaurant in the cities and it still is! The atmosphere, service and food have always pleased me. I visited again after a long hiatus (I've moved to St Louis Park so it's a bit of a jaunt) and was surprised by the changes they've made to the menu and interior. I decided to try something new since my go-to was always the Mostacolli Solerno, and went with the Tortellini Bolognese. It was so delicious! My bowl was as clean as it could get when I sent it back and I'm already trying to plan a trip back. The one thing I'd say was a disappointment was the service because our waitress only came by a couple of times during our entire lunch and we were there when the place opened on a Saturday so there weren't a lot of customers. She spent most of the time talking to a group of people near the restaurant bar area. I would've liked to see the friendly and attentive service I'm used to from the staff, but I'm letting it alive because I was also there to catch up with friends so the extra time to talk wasn't really a bad thing! Can't wait to go back soon.

Strawberry Salad. Amazing. A dessert in itself. Never so much flavor from a simple side salad. Any of their pastas with spicy sausage is worth going there for too - I had the Italian Sausage Dip and it was wonderful. The Alfredo is only so-so. If you get an app or salad, you'll have leftovers. House wine is only $4 for good amount. I enjoyed their reisling. Our server was wicked fast and made sure we got everything we needed. Classic Italian without the big $tag.

I attended a wedding at DeGidio's this past Saturday. The location, food, and service were all great. By far, the dishes with their homemade red sauce were the best options on the buffet. The meatballs were incredible. We eat here often, and will continue to do so for good Italian food at a reasonable price.

Everybody raves about the meatballs at Donatelli's in White Bear Lake ... but I am hear to tell you they have nothing on Degidio's. This large third-generation, family-owned West 7th Street cornerstone has been dishing up the goods since the 1930's. For a perfect meal (with leftovers), start with either the garlic cheese bread or bruschetta. Then a strawberry salad. For the main course the Italian meatball dip never fails (if you don't like peppers, get the baked mostaccioli and add a couple of meatballs -- this will be HUGE). The patrons tend toward being local Saint Paul residents (unless it's a hockey night). I regularly see people I know who live across the street or who have climbed down from Summit Avenue. The service is generally very attentive, but they get very busy at times so you may occasionally have to wave down your server -- not a big deal for you or for them. They are hustling as fast as they can. Degidio's is very large and offers banquet seating as well. The parking lot is also large, but does fill up almost every night. There is ample on street parking if need be.

I don't know why I don't frequent this place more often. That's gonna change. A large building with a large lot. It was full at 9PM. I think there was a party, because it didn't appear full inside, and we sat ourselves right away. A dark, moody atmosphere. My husband ordered the special, rigatoni with peppers and mushrooms. I ordered a small spaghetti with one meatball. The sauce glistened in the light. They were one of the businesses hurt by the animals at the RNC, who wanted to do nothing more than to destroy our city. Most of them aren't from here and that's all they do. The restaurant was also chosen by the PC assholes that were compelled to give them a hard time about the name HOT DAGO which is their signature sandwich. They seemed to have survived both. Making a living, bringing money to the city, and making people happy shouldn't be so hard!

Took my family to DeGidios for my birthday dinner. It was my second visit; the first was just a couple of weeks ago and I just had to return as soon as I could. The food is very good. And both times I had a tasty special that was not on the menu. This time I had a steak and pasta dish that was "oh so good". The only one who was disappointed was my son, who didn't realize that the blackened shrimp alfredo would be spicy. Though he still liked the noodles and alfredo sauce.

Another local joint reminicscent of Yarusso's or Donatelli's, and if you've read my reviews on those places then you'll know that I am not a huge fan.. I enjoyed the strawberry salad but that's probably my strongest recommendation. I got the rigatoni and thought the pasta was mushy, but the red sauce was pretty good. Hubby cannot remember his meatballs so I *guess* that says something...Huge portions, enough for leftovers for lunch. Really nice staff.

MEATBALLS THE SIZE OF SOFTBALLS! I mean that in the best way possible - Italian meatball dip Out of this world - gooD! The meatball dip comes with these peppers that I've never experienced before...they made me shut my eyes and moan in the restaurant....seriously embarrassed the boyfriend... Oh well, it was WORTH It. Nothings over $10 & there is enough food to feed 3 people I swear. Comes with a basket of garlic bread that is the REAL DEAL. Hot Dago is good, of course... & the strawberry salad is a must - although it felt weird ordering in winter, it was quite refreshing!

The boy and I stopped by here in the middle of March because the sun was finally out; we wanted to walk around because we were out of Netflix; and he'd had an awesome hot dago here a while ago. I'm glad we did. Sat in the bar area by some old photographs of a few generations of owners. Always a plus for me. The food could be awful but you tell me grandma made it first? I'll eat all of it and think it's magic. Plus there were once Mob ties to this place. I love that. The bartender could be the last Don in the twin cities and I'd be thrilled to see that he has a semi automatic resting next to the tap. Those ties have, according to the history printed on the menu, long since been severed. Too bad. My easily entertained mind will have to load the Soprano's onto our queue. It was right after the start of a Wild game so the bar was about half full. The bartender seemed a little harried (the only server in that part of the restaurant) but genuinely did a great job taking care of us. The food came in good time. The boy's hot dago was delicious: simple, homey, awesome goodness that lived up to his expectations. I found my penne dish to be a little lacking in flavor. Spicy, yes, but not enough other tastes to make it pack the punch I was looking for. A couple of decent Bloody Mary's later, we walked out into the street, happy and satisfied. I will definitely be back here soon to get that Dago for myself.

I came here for lunch with some co-workers and it was good. I had the Hot Dago sandwich thing and must say it was pretty delicious. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their stuff as well so I would say overall if you are ever in the area and want some decent Italian food you should stop in. The service was also great. It came out very fast and our waitress ordered for me and she did a great job...

Follow up on my last review from 6/30. We took my wife's aunt and uncle to DeGidio's for lunch on Saturday 7/7. My second trip to DeGidio's was as good as my first and my wife's aunt (100% Italian) was floored by the quality of the risotto balls and the pasta. Everything was as good as our first trip. This place is no fluke. It is consistently superior!!

I love this place maybe because my family goes way back with the DeGidio family, but mostly because the food is delicious, good portions and the service is great. Been eating here for the last fifteen years, at least once a month. Their Italian dishes are really good and they have a tasty red sauce that can't be beat. And, I don't know of any other place around that makes a better hot dago sandwich (yum). Also, please try the fried chicken, because it is absolutely wonderful. I can't say enough about the service, because I have never had to wait more than a few minutes before someone is at the table and the servers are always fast, friendly and pleasant. Since my family and I have been a fixture at this place for the past fifteen years, it would be a nice touch if they rewarded their long-time, loyal customers with a complimentary drink on a special occasion. I actually had a server buy me a drink (out of their own pocket), for my birthday one year, but that was the one and only time that happened. Just saying . . . .

Let it be known immediately: this is not a fine-dining, traditional Italian restaurant. This is pure Italian-American food. This means you will be served about a gallon of thick tomato sauce, meatballs the size of snow globes, and lots and lots of mid-shelf wine. If you're a connoisseur of Italian delicacies this may not warm the cockles of your heart. But if you enjoy hearty food (or, even better, you hail from an Italian-American background) this is one of the best restaurants in the West 7th Street area. Go on a Thursday and order the lasagna special. Unless you've been starving yourself all day you'll need a box to bring home the leftovers. It's one of the best lasagnas outside of what my grandmother used to make. The restaurant itself features a low-light decor that a 1930s gangster would appreciate. It's an excellent place for large groups--very spacious with a basement catering room. I went there a while back to receive a scholarship from Unico National (for being Italian-American, no less) and the buffet of rigatoni, lasagna, and garlic bread brought back memories of my early childhood. If you're familiar with Donatelli's in White Bear Lake, DeGidio's is the same concept only with a simplified menu and better valued entrees.

Simple, delicious, Italian fare. My wife and I had our grooms dinner there. Great history, ask one of the servers (used to be a speakeasy during Prohibition). Try the sausage dip!

We love the food here. Lots of Italian - fill you up stuff. Prices are low and portions are big. Nice dining room, but we always try to get a big table in the bar area so we can watch sports while we eat, drink and talk. Go there once and you'll come back - and when you do they'll probably remember your name and what you drink before you say anything. Be sure to order a strawberry salad.

Degidio's has become my most reliable meal out. Love the family feel they have. Have not had a bad experience in all my visits. My favorites are the Hot Dago and Spicy Penne. Great meatballs and wonderful sausage. They make several outstanding salads. Always excited to arrive and see what the nightly special is. Of course the garlic bread is top shelf stuff. All this great food and super reasonable prices. I have dined at Degidios with family, friends, and for business.

Went here for a family birthday dinner and everyone was pleased with their meal. As advised, the strawberry salad was lovely. The poppyseed dressing is suprisingly light and complimentary to the strawberries and red onion. I had the hot dago and yummm!. This is real old school italian, nothing fancy shmancy but it's good quality and priced right. Actually less than right. It's worth more. We'll definately be back!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
